Jo Mora (1876-1947) was born in Uruguay to an artistic family. His father was a sculptor and his brother was a classical painter. His family immigrated to Boston in 1880, where he attended art school. He left to go live among the Hopi and Navajo tribes near Oraibi, AZ, from 1904 -1906. In 1907, Mora moved to California, where he lived and worked the remainder of his life. Mora was an artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. He has been called the “Renaissance Man of the West.”

Jo Mora was encouraged as an artist by Frederick Remington. Zane Grey featured Mora’s drawings in Western Magazine, alongside Ed Borein and Charles Russell. He is best known for his series of maps, or cartes, as he referred to them. They are historically accurate and very collectible. His Yellowstone map is one of the rarest and most collectible. This illustrated map was originally published in black and white and sold in the Haynes Picture Shops in the park. This version of Mora’s Yellowstone map has been tinted in the style of hand coloring of the Art Deco period.
