This is an 1871 photograph was taken by William Henry Jackson of Thomas Moran on the terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs. Jackson and Moran were members of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871. This was the first federally funded geological survey to explore and document the region of northwestern Wyoming Territory. Jackson’s photographs, and Moran’s artwork, helped convince Congress to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the world. Jackson and Moran worked together and Jackson often placed Moran in his photographs for perspective.
