Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces and Hotel - ca. 1895 Albumen Photo

This is a tinted ca. 1895 photograph taken by Frank Jay (F. J.) Haynes. Haynes first came to Yellowstone in 1881 as the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was one of the first concessionaires in the park and established Haynes Photo Shops throughout the park. This early albumen photo has been tinted in period hand-coloring style. Haynes Studio was located across from this hotel. Haynes also operated a Haynes Photo Shop in the lobby of this hotel. This original hotel was taken down and replaced by a remodeled hotel in 1913.
