Thomas Moran was one of the most important and finest American landscape painters of the 19^th century. Moran was a member of the 1871 and 1872 Hayden Geological Surveys that explored the region in northwestern Wyoming Territory that became Yellowstone National Park. His 1871 artwork helped convince Congress to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the world in 1872.

This watercolor painting by Moran was published as a chromolithograph for the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia, the first official World’s Fair to be held in the United States.
