This is an 1871 photograph was taken by William Henry Jackson. Thomas Moran can be seen sitting on the rock at the bottom of the fall. Jackson and Moran were members of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871. This was the first federally funded geological survey to explore and document the region of northwestern Wyoming Territory.
