Thomas Moran was one of the most important and finest American landscape painters of the 19th century. Moran was a member of the 1871 and 1872 Hayden Geological Surveys that explored the region in northwestern Wyoming Territory that became Yellowstone National Park. His 1871 artwork helped convince Congress to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the world in 1872.
