Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Coaches - ca. 1890 Albumen Photo

This is a circa 1890 albumen photograph taken by Frank Jay (F. J.) Haynes. Haynes first came to Yellowstone in 1881 as the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was one of the first concessionaires in the park and established Haynes Photo Shops throughout the park. This is a photo of a Tally-Ho stagecoach in front of the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. Tally-Ho stagecoaches would host as many as 34 passengers and were often top heavy. They were used exclusively to transport tourists to and from the Northern Pacific Railroad depot at the northern entrance to the park in Gardiner, MT, to Mammoth Hotsprings. These coaches were prone to topple over in the steep Gardiner Canyon and several were involved in wrecks.
